Shazna Nessa

BIO

Shazna Nessa began her career at the Associated Press and later worked with Condé Nast’s Portfolio magazine and The Wall Street Journal. She also worked in philanthropy at the Knight Center, taught at the journalism schools of the City University of New York and Columbia University, and has presided on advisory boards including the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University, The New School, and the International Women’s Media Foundation. From 2020 to 2022, she served as president of the Online News Association. Shazna has received a John S. Knight fellowship from Stanford University and a Sulzberg fellowship from Columbia University. Her teams and projects have won Pulitzer Prizes and awards from the Overseas Press Club, New York Press Club, Editor and Publisher, and the Gerald Loeb Awards. She has been a juror for major award bodies including the Pulitzer, the International Center for Journalism, the Asian American Journalists Association, the Data Journalism Awards, the Online News Association, and the Society for News Design. She has served five terms on the Pulitzer jury, most recently for Public Service Journalism in 2023.
